Faculty Advisor

Michelle Dean, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Management
mdean@sdsu.edu

My name is Dr. Michelle Dean, and I serve as Faculty Advisor to the SHRM chapter at SDSU.  I joined the student SHRM chapter at LSU as an undergraduate and it was pivotal for me in piquing my interest in HR and helping me to see the many paths a career in HR can take.  I am happy to help students have that same “ah ha” moment that happened for me when I joined SHRM as a student.  I am proud to advise a nationally recognized SHRM chapter which has received the top merit designation given to SHRM chapters, the Outstanding Chapter Award, in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and the SHRM Superior Merit Award in 2016.  Our chapter has been recognized by SDSU receiving the Outstanding Organization Award from Associated Students, SDSU Dean of Students, and the Fowler College of Business, respectively, in recognition of our chapter’s commitment to excellence in student professional development.

We are open to all majors, and I hope you’ll check out our website, come to weekly meetings and events, and talk to our officers and members about SHRM.  Hope to see you at an upcoming meeting!

Major: Spanish and Business Administration Management with a specialization in Human Resource Management
Minor: Leadership Development and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies
Year: Senior
Hometown: Chula Vista, CA

I joined SHRM of SDSU in Fall 2018 with the assistance of my Aztec Mentoring Program mentor as well as another mentor figure of mine from work. I joined the SDSU chapter because I want to expand my network within the HR field and overall learn about what the organization was about. Thanks to SHRM, I have been able to increase my knowledge about HR and its subcategories with the numerous guest speakers and fun-yet-professional events in which I have met several like-minded individuals whom I call my friends. I recently attended the National SHRM Conference 2019 in Las Vegas, and it is so far my favorite experience because I was able to network with other SHRM professionals from all over the world, I attended numerous speaker sessions in which I received great knowledge, and I was able to develop my career in HR with numerous workshops while bonding with my fellow SHRM SDSU members!

My name is Grace Coulter, and I am serving as the SHRM SDSU Vice President. I joined SHRM because I wanted to connect with students who were also pursuing a career in HR. I attended the kickoff event in the Spring of 2019 and was drawn to the organization’s dedication to developing professional individuals while fostering a supportive, tight-knit community. I am thrilled to be serving as the Fall 2021 Vice President and am excited to continue to build my HR knowledge and abilities. My goal is for our chapter’s members to feel prepared for their futures and professional careers. SHRM provides a valuable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of HR and allows them to explore the many paths available for post-graduates. I have enjoyed getting more involved with our chapter this last year through serving as the Director of Corporate Relations which prepared me for my summer internship as an Employee Relations Intern at Bank of the West. I cannot thank SHRM enough for guiding me towards opportunity and developing my professional skills so that I am able to pursue my passion. I am looking forward to getting to know and learn from our amazing members!

Hi, my name is Danielle Lopez, and I am the Executive Secretary. I joined SHRM in the Spring of 2020 and was the Fall 2020's SD HR Forum Liaison and Spring 2021's Member Relations. I have enjoyed all the benefits the organization has had to offer such as the guest speakers, workshops, and socials. I am also a transfer student coming from two colleges, so this organization has provided me opportunities to meet and network with other students who have similar career goals. One of my favorite parts of SHRM, is the variety of guest speakers they have at the meetings. The speakers always provide insightful information about their career in Human Resources, a lot of them are SDSU alumni as well. I am looking forward to my last semester at SDSU being SHRM's Secretary.

After hearing about this organization during my first semester at SDSU in BA300, I joined one year later as a sophomore Fall 2019. I have always been interested in HR and knew that it was what I wanted to do from a fairly early age. I joined this organization to further my knowledge of the different subdivisions and current trends within the HR realm. I also joined to learn what networking was, how to network, and begin that journey with HR professionals and my peers. I can positively say, now that I have been a part of SHRM for four semesters, I have accomplished all of those things. The one thing that I felt was missing was getting more involved in the process that goes behind all of the meetings, events, fundraisers, etc. Last semester, I was the Events Coordinator where I got to plan events to allow members to get to know one another, create a safe space to be themselves, and have fun! Now as your Executive Treasurer, my goals are to keep the organizational funds and point system organized while also delving in further to meeting all of you! I am looking forward to this semester being in person -- please come stop by and say hi or email me for any further information on our membership/chapter! All majors are welcome! :)

Major: Psychology with an Emphasis in Industrial/Organizational Psychology
Minor: Honors Interdisciplinary Studies

Year: Senior
Hometown: San Diego, CA

I joined SHRM SDSU because I wanted to strengthen my knowledge of HR and network with fellow HR students who share a similar drive and passion for HR. I became a SHRM SDSU active member during the Spring 2021 semester after adding the I/O emphasis to my Psychology major. Lucky enough I was able to compete at SHRM SDSU's case competition that same semester and it was definitely an enlightening experience. SHRM has even allowed me to have networking experiences with amazing SHRM Alumni that I would have never been able to meet and network with if I were not a member! When I think of SHRM SDSU, I think of not only professional growth in the field but personal growth as well! I can't wait to see what the Fall 2021 semester awaits for our dedicated and ambitious SHRM members along with all of the great things we all will accomplish in the near future!

Hi, my name is Calista Dao. I am your Fall 2021 Co-Marketing & Media Director. I have been with SHRM SDSU since Fall 2020 as a regular member. My initial reason for joining SHRM was to connect with other students that were also interested in Human Resources. I realized throughout my time in SHRM that the organization offered meaningful connections and much more. There were guest speaker events that brought HR professionals in to speak about various topics that helped students handle real life situations. Not only that, the socials allowed for members to interact with one another in a casual and fun setting which helped strengthen bonds amongst the community. I highly recommend SHRM for the connections and the copious amount of HR knowledge that it has to offer. I cannot wait to have another great semester and to see our SHRM members once again!

Major: Business Administration Management with a specialization in Human Resource Management & Political Science
Year: Junior
Hometown: Milpitas, CA

My freshman year I switched my major from General Business to Management with a specialization in HR and added a second major in Political Science. I want to combine both of my interests by pursuing a career in Human Resources while hopefully working for a non-profit political organization. While researching different ways to learn more about Human Resources, I came across SHRM. I joined SHRM in Fall of 2020 because it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about the field and network with like-minded individuals. Through SHRM I was able to gain valuable knowledge through the many events put on by SHRM that would be beneficial post-graduation. Last semester I had the pleasure of being the Co-Marketing and Media Director and I am eager to continue my SHRM journey as the Events Coordinator. In addition, I am excited to finally experience SHRM in an in-person setting and be able to meet everyone!,

Hi everyone! I joined SHRM in spring of 2021, and it was one of the best decisions I have made in my academic career! I wanted to make new friends and grow my professional network. Since joining, I have been able to do both! Despite being online last semester, I loved attending all the meetings, workshops, and guest speaker events. SHRM fosters an amazing sense of community to the college itself and to professionals within the San Diego HR realm. I am so excited to be a part of such an amazing team, and I cant wait to see what our chapter will do this semester!

From the first meeting I attended, I connected with the organization right away. I loved how passionate everyone was about the organization and it's mission! I pride myself being surrounded with like-minded individuals. Going into the fall semester, I am excited to be an officer for SDSU SHRM and helping the organization continue to grow in the coming years.

Hi, my name is Brooke Vu and I am serving as SDSU SHRM's Information Systems Director for the Fall 2021 semester. Joining SHRM was one of the best decisions I have ever made during my years at SDSU because I was able to become more involved on campus, build connections with people who share similar career interests, and gain more knowledge about what human resources is. Development Director
Jenna Green
shrmsdsu.development@gmail.com

Major: Psychology with an Industrial/Organizational emphasis & Communications
Year: Junior
Hometown: Billerica, MA

I learned that the field of Human Resources was another common path within psychology after taking my PSY 201: Careers in Psychology course and I instantly fell in love! That semester I added the I/O emphasis and started taking those courses. I had learned about SHRM during my freshman year but was too nervous to join until last Spring, and I am so glad I did. Through even just one virtual semester of SHRM I have learned so much about the field of HR, networked with a number of HR professionals, and have been able to develop my interpersonal skills with interviews and personal branding. I wanted to be Development Director because junior year is a critical year for finding internships and job opportunities, so while I was already going to be researching I wanted to also help my fellow SHRMies find these opportunities as well. I have even started working on a small research project with Professor Dean to find common KSAOs, salaries, and experience needed for different job titles within HR to further help our members be successful after graduation. I am so excited to see what this year will bring:)

Major: Sociology
Minor: Communications and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies
Year: Senior
Hometown: Sacramento, CA

Hi everyone! My name is C’yana and I am your Fall 2021 Member Relations Director. I initially came across SHRM SDSU in Fall 2018, but I did not officially become a member until Spring 2021. Looking back now, my biggest mistake was not joining this organization sooner! Everyone is so welcoming and works really hard to create the greatest experience for all members, both personally and professionally. As a Sociology major, this club allowed me to increase my business acumen and become exposed to the variety of responsibilities tasked to Human Resources. Even after one semester with SHRM SDSU, I have learned so much about work etiquette and the various ways to create my professional brand. I learn something new with each guest speaker and thoroughly enjoy the experience. As your Member Relations Director, I hope to maintain an open line of communication with our members about chapter events and gain new SHRMies along the way!

She serves as the Executive Director for Dance Marathon at SDSU where she oversees the largest philanthropic organization on campus that has raised over $1.5 million since the start. Through this current experience raising funds and support for Rady, she hopes to become a hospital executive for a children’s hospital in the future.

Major: Business Administration Management with a specialization in Human Resource Management
Minor: Psychology
Year: Junior
Hometown: San Diego, CA

Hello! My name is Ayah, and I joined SHRM to learn more about the world of HR and gain connections. It had always been a dream of mine to attend SDSU and thankfully I transferred to SDSU in the spring of 2021. Prior to transferring I attended San Diego City College where I achieved two associated degrees in Biology and Business Administration. During my time there I discovered my love for HR and working with people, so once I transferred, I was looking for opportunities to get involved and started to attended SHRM meetings. Even though the meetings were virtual, everyone was so welcoming and I learned so much, and gained many connections in such a short period of time, and I am excited to learn more as the Historian of SHRM SDSU.
