My name is Dr. Michelle Dean, and I serve as Faculty Advisor to the SHRM chapter at SDSU. I joined the student SHRM chapter at LSU as an undergraduate and it was pivotal for me in piquing my interest in HR and helping me to see the many paths a career in HR can take. I am happy to help students have that same “ah ha” moment that happened for me when I joined SHRM as a student. I am proud to advise a nationally recognized SHRM chapter which has received the top merit designation given to SHRM chapters, the Outstanding Chapter Award, in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and the SHRM Superior Merit Award in 2016. Our chapter has been recognized by SDSU receiving the Outstanding Organization Award from Associated Students, SDSU Dean of Students, and the Fowler College of Business, respectively, in recognition of our chapter’s commitment to excellence in student professional development.

I first joined SHRM last semester and was instantly hooked by how engaging and supportive the organization was. I was drawn to the club because created a space to connect with like-minded individuals, but also provided valuable opportunities to learn and grow in the HR field. Through speaker events, I gained insights and tips that will help me in my future endeavors, and through the Case Competition, I was able to work alongside others in a collaborative environment that gave me experience in HR problem-solving. Being part of SHRM has already been such a rewarding experience, and I am excited to continue building on what I’ve learned this semester. Although I tend to be more introverted, I’m always open to conversations—whether it’s about SHRM, classes, K-pop (especially TWICE, which I can talk about endlessly), sports, or even Harry Potter. I’m excited for everything this semester has to offer and to continue growing alongside such a supportive and motivated group of people.
