Michelle Dean, Ph.D.

My name is Dr. Michelle Dean, and I serve as Faculty Advisor to the SHRM chapter at SDSU. I joined the student SHRM chapter at LSU as an undergraduate and it was pivotal for me in piquing my interest in HR and helping me to see the many paths a career in HR can take. I am happy to help students have that same “ah ha” moment that happened for me when I joined SHRM as a student. I am proud to advise a nationally recognized SHRM chapter which has received the top merit designation given to SHRM chapters, the Outstanding Chapter Award, in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and the SHRM Superior Merit Award in 2016. Our chapter has been recognized by SDSU receiving the Outstanding Organization Award from Associated Students, SDSU Dean of Students, and the Fowler College of Business, respectively, in recognition of our chapter’s commitment to excellence in student professional development.
We are open to all majors, and I hope you’ll check out our website, come to weekly meetings and events, and talk to our officers and members about SHRM. Hope to see you at an upcoming meeting! |

Major: Business Administration Management with a specialization in Human Resource Management
Minor: Marketing Year: Senior Hometown: San Jose, CA I joined SHRM because I was looking to gain experience and take a step closer towards developing my professional portfolio. I wanted to join an organization that not only developed professionalism, but also gave me a chance to make friends and build my network. SHRM fulfilled everything I was looking for in an organization and more! Through SHRM, I have learned what Human Resources is actually about. But along the way, I’ve also understood how important HR is, nowadays more than ever. With more technological advances and machine automation, it is crucial to not lose the “human” aspect. I remember the first day I attended a SHRM meeting, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how passionate everyone was. I could tell that being a part of SHRM really meant something to them. That was what pushed me to officially join and I'm so glad I did. This past summer, I got the amazing opportunity to attend the annual National SHRM Conference, and WOW what an experience that was! I am so passionate about this student chapter, HR, and everything that SHRM does for this profession and its members. I hope to help others follow their passions, as well, regardless if it’s in HR. Our organization accepts (and encourages) students of all majors to join, and I find that the opportunity to be surrounded by passionate individuals to be truly rewarding. I really hope you consider checking out and hopefully joining our organization. I am excited to, once again, be your President this semester and can’t wait for what this semester and the future has in store! |

Hello, my name is Luis Rodriguez, and I am the Treasurer for SHRM SDSU for the Fall 2020 semester!
Major: Spanish and Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management Minor: Leadership Development and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Chula Vista, CA I joined SHRM of SDSU in Fall 2018 with the assistance of my Aztec Mentoring Program mentor as well as another mentor figure of mine from work. I joined the SDSU chapter because I want to expand my network within the HR field and overall learn about what the organization was about. Thanks to SHRM, I have been able to increase my knowledge about HR and its subcategories with the numerous guest speakers and fun-yet-professional events in which I have met several like-minded individuals whom I call my friends. I recently attended the National SHRM Conference 2019 in Las Vegas, and it is so far my favorite experience because I was able to network with other SHRM professionals from all over the world, I attended numerous speaker sessions in which I received great knowledge, and I was able to develop my career in HR with numerous workshops while bonding with my fellow SHRM SDSU members!" |

Major: Business Administration Management with specialization in Human Resources
Minor: Industrial Organizational Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: Jakarta, Indonesia I joined SHRM because I wanted to meet others who had similar interests and career goals as me. I also wanted to network with fellow HR students and see potential career opportunities that were offered. I am so happy that I enjoyed this organization and put myself out there. I have made great friends, increased my network, and was able to gain a job to work for an author. I applied for the position with the author through SHRM and researched for him about employee motivation. The topic tied into an aspect of HR so perfectly and I was so glad to have an opportunity like this due to SHRM. I am excited for the book to be published in May and hope that he can be a guest speaker for us in the Spring. SHRM has allowed me to learn new topics that are not covered in class and gain insight from alums at their workplace. Though SHRM had to transition online in March, I am excited for what we have prepared for SHRM this Fall. |

Major: Business Administration in Finance
Year: Senior Hometown: Chula Vista, CA I originally heard about SHRM SDSU when I was enrolled in MGT-352 with Professor Dean during Fall 2019. I was interested in becoming more active within the business student community at SDSU, so I decided to become a member at their Kick-Off event the following semester. As a member, SHRM gave me the tools and resources I needed to network and build my professional profile on a higher scale. Whether it be through revising my resume or pairing me with a real-world professional through their Peer Mentorship Program, SHRM always went above and beyond. I discovered a sense of belongingness that I searched for as a commuter student. Ultimately, I wanted to give back to SHRM. During the Fall 2020 Elections, I ran for the Executive Treasurer position so that I could be of service to members. I am extremely grateful to be honored with this role and am excited to connect with any and new members! |

Major: Industrial and Organizational Psychology
Year: Senior Hometown: Long Beach, CA As Industrial and Organizational Psychology Major, I joined SHRM to build a bridge between my major and the Human Resource Management Career Field. As a transfer student, when I arrived at SDSU I did not have any friends and very few connections. However, I did have a strong desire to build the community. So, instead of focusing on what I lacked, I earnestly searched for an opportunity to build a network of likeminded individuals and secretly hoped to make a few friends in the process. SHRM provided the opportunity for me to complete both. Through the many activities, workshops, and career building resources SHRM provides both locally and nationally, I have been able to gain the tools needed to help me prepare for success as a college student and after I graduate, including connecting with some great people along the way. The experience of having to build a community from the ground up has nurture my passion for taking part in building bridges for others. In this new virtual format, as the Co-Marketing and Media Director, I am excited to fulfill my role providing a support system for our SHRM members and other SDSU students. I can personally attest to the power of creating something out of the most undesirable experiences. I am sure this is not what any of us expected. However, it doesn’t mean we can’t create beauty out of the ashes. |
Major: Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management
Minor: Industrial and Organizational Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: Baldwin Park, CA I am a former manager who worked in the entertainment industry and was responsible for 200 employees with liquid assets of up to 3 million dollars under my name. Our human resources department supplied consistent training to our management team which included workshops in CA labor law, performance management, and others. I became fascinated with this team who were the backbone of our business and kept us away from potential lawsuits. This was my inspiration to attend college and major in the field while leaving a comfortable career. To complement my major, I chose industrial organizational psychology as a minor to help me understand the wants and needs of employees. A classmate of mine would speak about the organization and inspired me to attend a meeting. From the first meeting, I knew that the organization was a perfect fit for me. They are very welcoming and care about their members. I am hoping to network with many of you as we work together this year. |

Minor: Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Lemon Grove, CA I joined SHRM in the fall of 2019 because I wanted to increase my practical knowledge in HR Management and I wanted to build a network that could contribute to my professional development. As a community college transfer student and a first generation student, I was unsure about the path that I should take at SDSU but SHRM inspired me to be a leader. The most inspiring event was the Young Professionals Panel because I understood that SHRM makes a great impact for many students. It was heart-warming to see that SHRM Alumni wanted to dedicate their time and effort in order to pass on their knowledge and experience to current students. SHRM is an inclusive community that has connected me with fellow students, professors, faculty, Alumni, and other HR Professionals. I have been able to make many great friends through the variety of social and professional events that SHRM offers. I look forward to this academic year as an opportunity to make a great impact through SHRM by fostering a welcoming community that inspires fellow students to lead and get involved with SHRM. |

Major: Business Administration Management, Specialization in Human Resource Management
Minor: Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: Phoenix, AZ Hello! My name is Marcella Hauck and I am serving as the SD SHRM Liaison for the Fall 2020 Semester. I am so excited to see what this semester has in store for SHRM SDSU! The transition to online learning has been a challenge for all of us, but this organization has shown me what it looks and feels like to stay grounded and connected through a community with like-minded people, even in a virtual setting. From the moment I learned about SHRM, I knew it was an organization I wanted to be a part of, especially as I was in the process of officially changing my major. I joined SHRM last semester when I switched business tracks and chose to specialize in Human Resources. In this period of time, I have gained so much valuable knowledge about the world of HR and the many possible avenues that can be pursued post-graduation. This organization adds so much value to my life and I look forward to making connections and growing my professional network even further this semester. |
Major: Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resource Management
Minor: Marketing Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA My name is Danielle Lopez and I am currently the SD HR Forum Liaison. I wanted to go into Human Resources, because I enjoy the idea of making the work place a more desirable place to be. At my past places of employment, I was always inspired by my Human Resources Director. I joined SHRM because I wanted to network with students that were in a similar field as me. I heard about the organization through my Human Resources class. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in SHRM, especially hearing all the guest speakers. Human Resources is a broad field and my listening to the guest speakers has helped me narrow down what I want to do in Human Resources specifically. I am looking forward to growing and obtaining new skills in this upcoming fall semester. I am also excited to be able to network and learn from the SHRM Forums. I am hoping to bring valuable information back to the members to apply. |

Minor: Business Management and Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Junior Hometown: San Francisco, CA Hi, my name is Annie Connors and I am the Information Systems Director. I joined SHRM my sophomore year because I wanted to learn more about Human Resources and the different job options within HR. I love SHRM because of the amazing speakers, officers, and members that I have met (and hope to meet!). I have learned so much about how to prepare myself for my future career and what parts of Human Resources interest me the most. My favorite memory from last year was the kick off meeting! We got to hear from some amazing SDSU SHRM alumni and have free pizza :) I look forward to meeting all of the new members this year. |

Major: Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resource Management
Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA I am from San Diego and live at home so I have stayed in my comfort zone, but I wanted to change that so I initially joined SHRM because I thought it would be a great way to get involved on campus while exploring HR to decide if that's the field I was truly interested in. Professor Dean talked about the benefits of SHRM a ton in her class and I really wanted to take advantage of them. While I have only been in SHRM for one semester, I recognize the amazing opportunities to gain experience, knowledge, and networks. I spent the last couple months of the Spring 2020 semester sorting through, looking at, and applying for HR internships and have learned to do so efficiently. I hope to simplify this process for everyone and set them up with opportunities for success! I am excited for what's to come, even in this new and unusual format, and am grateful for the extra preparation and experiences that SHRM has given me. |

Year: Senior Hometown: Escondido, CA My name is Sherrie Sales and I am the Alumni Relations Director for Fall 2020. I joined the SDSU SHRM Chapter last semester with the hopes to be actively involved at SDSU. Being a member of SHRM has motivated me to become an officer this Fall. I enjoyed the positive energy and I wanted to share and have a better understanding of the impact that SHRM had for each member. I wanted to be a part of an organization with a team who shared the same passions and similar interests of HR. I joined this chapter to acquire more experience, expand my network and to have the chance to grow professionally. I am thrilled to be your Alumni Relations Director and immensely excited to see what this semester has in store for all of us. |

Minor: Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hello, my name is Sarah Zimmerman and I joined SHRM in Fall 2019 to get more involved in the HR community here on campus. I heard about SHRM in one of my business classes and immediately was interested because I am majoring in HR. Before joining I didn't know that many people who were also majoring in HR. The first meeting I attended for SHRM was the Fall Kick Off Event and right away I knew I wanted to join to learn more and meet other students. I hope to get to know and connect with fellow SHRM members this semester either through our events or in class. I am a local San Diegan and I am pleased to share that I plan to graduate at the end of this fall semester. This past spring semester SHRM gave their members an opportunity to be paired up with an alumni. I was able to ask questions about HR, their experiences in SDSU SHRM, and more! The alumni that I was paired up with also shared his experience on how he got more involved with SRHM. After hearing his experience I wanted to get more involved as well. I am looking forward to the upcoming events this semester and I hope you are too! |
