Michelle Dean, Ph.D.
|
My name is Dr. Michelle Dean, and I serve as Faculty Advisor to the SHRM chapter at SDSU. I joined the student SHRM chapter at LSU as an undergraduate and it was pivotal for me in piquing my interest in HR and helping me to see the many paths a career in HR can take. I am happy to help students have that same “ah ha” moment that happened for me when I joined SHRM as a student. I am proud to advise a nationally recognized SHRM chapter which has received the top merit designation given to SHRM chapters, the Outstanding Chapter Award, in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and the SHRM Superior Merit Award in 2016. Our chapter has been recognized by SDSU receiving the Outstanding Organization Award from Associated Students, SDSU Dean of Students, and the Fowler College of Business, respectively, in recognition of our chapter’s commitment to excellence in student professional development.
We are open to all majors, and I hope you’ll check out our website, come to weekly meetings and events, and talk to our officers and members about SHRM. Hope to see you at an upcoming meeting! |

Major: Business Administration Management with specialization in Human Resources
Minor: Industrial Organizational Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: Jakarta, Indonesia I joined SHRM because I wanted to meet others who had similar interests and career goals as me. I also wanted to network with fellow HR students and see potential career opportunities that were offered. I am so happy that I enjoyed this organization and put myself out there. I have made great friends, increased my network, and was able to gain a job to work for an author. I applied for the position with the author through SHRM and researched for him about employee motivation. The topic tied into an aspect of HR so perfectly and I was so glad to have an opportunity like this due to SHRM. I am excited for the book to be published in May and hope that he can be a guest speaker for us in the Spring. SHRM has allowed me to learn new topics that are not covered in class and gain insight from alums at their workplace. Though SHRM had to transition online in March, I am excited for what we have prepared for SHRM this Fall. |

Major: Spanish and Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management
Minor: Leadership Development and Honors Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Chula Vista, CA I joined SHRM of SDSU in Fall 2018 with the assistance of my Aztec Mentoring Program mentor as well as another mentor figure of mine from work. I joined the SDSU chapter because I want to expand my network within the HR field and overall learn about what the organization was about. Thanks to SHRM, I have been able to increase my knowledge about HR and its subcategories with the numerous guest speakers and fun-yet-professional events in which I have met several like-minded individuals whom I call my friends. I recently attended the National SHRM Conference 2019 in Las Vegas, and it is so far my favorite experience because I was able to network with other SHRM professionals from all over the world, I attended numerous speaker sessions in which I received great knowledge, and I was able to develop my career in HR with numerous workshops while bonding with my fellow SHRM SDSU members!" |

Major: Business Administration in Finance
Minor: Industrial and Organizational Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: Baldwin Park, CA I am a former manager who worked in the entertainment industry and was responsible for 200 employees with liquid assets of up to 3 million dollars under my name. Our human resources department supplied consistent training to our management team which included workshops in CA labor law, performance management, and others. I became fascinated with this team who were the backbone of our business and kept us away from potential lawsuits. This was my inspiration to attend college and major in the field while leaving a comfortable career. To complement my major, I chose industrial organizational psychology as a minor to help me understand the wants and needs of employees. A classmate of mine would speak about the organization and inspired me to attend a meeting. From the first meeting, I knew that the organization was a perfect fit for me. They are very welcoming and care about their members. I am hoping to network with many of you as we work together this year. |

Major: Marketing with a specialization in IMC
Minor: Management Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hi there! I transferred to SDSU in the Fall of 2020 and I was contemplating what I would like to declare a minor in. Management was one of the few minors I thought of but I didn't know too much about it. As my first semester here, I wanted to take full advantage of the organizations and resources the school had to offer by getting involved in a few. I made a friend at SDSU in the beginning of the semester and he suggested that I attend SHRM's kickoff with him. After being in the meeting for not even 10 minutes, I knew I wanted to join! As the semester went on, SHRM helped so much in making up my decisions with minoring in Management. SHRM is well operated with many valuable resources that help grow my interest and knowledge in the field. Moving into the Spring semester of 2021, I decided to take on the role of Co-Marketing and Media Director. I want to gain experience in marketing and help promote an organization that has helped me so much. My hope is that I can help with reaching others that would benefit from joining SHRM as well. I look forward to what Spring 2021 will bring here at SHRM. Feel free to reach out to me about anything! |

Major: Business Management with a Specialization in HR, Political Science
Year: Sophomore Hometown: Milpitas, CA Last year I switched my major from General Business to Management with a specialization in HR and added a second major in Political Science. I want to combine both of my interests by pursuing a career in Human Resources and hopefully working for a non-profit political organization. While researching ways to learn more about Human Resources, I came across SHRM. I joined SHRM in Fall of 2020 because it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about the field and network with like-minded individuals. Fall semester I was able to gain valuable knowledge through the many events put on by SHRM that would be beneficial post graduation. As the Co-Marketing and Media Director, I am excited to be more involved in the organization, make more friends, and learn a lot more! |

Major: Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources Management
Minor: Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Lemon Grove, CA I joined SHRM in the fall of 2019 because I wanted to increase my practical knowledge in HR Management and I wanted to build a network that could contribute to my professional development. As a community college transfer student and a first generation student, I was unsure about the path that I should take at SDSU but SHRM inspired me to be a leader. The most inspiring event was the Young Professionals Panel because I understood that SHRM makes a great impact for many students. It was heart-warming to see that SHRM Alumni wanted to dedicate their time and effort in order to pass on their knowledge and experience to current students. SHRM is an inclusive community that has connected me with fellow students, professors, faculty, Alumni, and other HR Professionals. I have been able to make many great friends through the variety of social and professional events that SHRM offers. I look forward to this academic year as an opportunity to make a great impact through SHRM by fostering a welcoming community that inspires fellow students to lead and get involved with SHRM. |
Events Coordinator
|
Major: Business Management with an emphasis in Human Resources
Year: Junior Hometown: Salinas, CA After hearing about this organization during my first semester at SDSU in BA300, I joined one year later as a sophomore Fall 2019. I have always been interested in HR and knew that it was what I wanted to do from a fairly early age. I joined this organization to further my knowledge of the different subdivisions and current trends within the HR realm. I also joined to learn what networking was, how to network, and begin that journey with HR professionals and my peers. I can positively say, now that I have been a part of SHRM for three semesters, I have accomplished all of those things. The one thing that I felt was missing was getting more involved in the process that goes behind all of the meetings, events, fundraisers, etc. As your Spring 2021 Events Coordinator, my goal now is to meet and further develop relationships with the other officers and members of this organization. I am excited to do that by planning events to allow members to get to know one another, create a safe space to be themselves, and have fun! I am looking forward to this semester and meeting all of the new members. All majors are welcome! :) |

Year: Junior Hometown: Ventura, CA My name is Grace Coulter, and I am serving as the Corporate Relations Director. I joined SHRM because I wanted to connect with students who were also pursuing a career in HR. I attended the kickoff event in the Spring of 2019 and was drawn to the organization’s dedication to developing professional individuals while fostering a supportive, tight-knit community. I am thrilled to be serving as the Spring 2021 Corporate Relations Director and look forward to networking with HR professionals in San Diego. SHRM provides a valuable opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of HR and allows them to explore the many paths available for post-graduates. So far, I have enjoyed connecting with my SHRM mentor who has provided me with great advice and encouraging words. I am certain we will make the best of this semester, even in this virtual setting! |
Member Relations Director

Major: Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Minor: Marketing Year: Senior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hi, my name is Danielle Lopez, and I am the Member Relations Director for Spring 2021. I joined SHRM in the Spring of 2020 and was the Fall 2020 SD HR Forum Liaison. I have enjoyed all the benefits the organization has had to offer such as the guest speakers, workshops, and socials. I am also a transfer student coming from two colleges, so this organization has provided me opportunities to meet and network with other students who have similar career goals. One of my favorite parts of SHRM, is the variety of guest speakers they have at the meetings. The speakers always provide insightful information about their career in Human Resources, a lot of them are SDSU alumni as well. I am looking forward to being able to provide SHRM members a community and updated on any chapter updates. |
Alumni Relations Director
|
Major: Business Administration with a specialization in Human Resource Management
Year: Senior Hometown: Escondido, CA My name is Sherrie Sales and I am the Alumni Relations Director for Spring 2021. I joined the SDSU SHRM Chapter last semester with the hopes to be actively involved at SDSU. Being a member of SHRM has motivated me to become an officer this Spring. I enjoyed the positive energy and I wanted to share and have a better understanding of the impact that SHRM had for each member. I wanted to be a part of an organization with a team who shared the same passions and similar interests of HR. I joined this chapter to acquire more experience, expand my network and to have the chance to grow professionally. I wanted to be more involved on campus and I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to continually learn, engage, and develop more experience within the HR industry. I am thrilled to be your Alumni Relations Director and immensely excited to see what this semester has in store for all of us. |
Historian
|
Major: Business Administration Management - Specialization in Human Resource Management
Minor: Industrial - Organizational Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hi, my name is Vanessa Alicea and I will be serving as your Historian for the Spring 2021 semester. I first joined SHRM as a freshman and was welcomed right away. SHRM has always provided an inviting, helpful, and friendly environment. Four years later, and I am extremely excited to be an officer this semester. I am particularly looking forward to being the Historian because I have not been too involved in campus organizations. Working part-time in a HR department, volunteering as a softball coach, studying abroad for a semester, and previously have been a commuter, I did not find I had much time to spend on campus. However, the professional and global connections that I created has made a huge impact on the way I view the world. I am delighted to be the Historian and document this virtual semester in a creative and valuable way. SHRM has provided me with amazing opportunities and I am looking forward to giving back to this organization and finishing my last semester just as I started my first, with SHRM! |
