Michelle Dean, Ph.D.
|
My name is Dr. Michelle Dean, and I serve as Faculty Advisor to the SHRM chapter at SDSU. I joined the student SHRM chapter at LSU as an undergraduate and it was pivotal for me in piquing my interest in HR and helping me to see the many paths a career in HR can take. I am happy to help students have that same “ah ha” moment that happened for me when I joined SHRM as a student. I am proud to advise a nationally recognized SHRM chapter which has received the top merit designation given to SHRM chapters, the Outstanding Chapter Award, in 2014, 2015, and 2017 and the SHRM Superior Merit Award in 2016. Our chapter has been recognized by SDSU receiving the Outstanding Organization Award from Associated Students, SDSU Dean of Students, and the Fowler College of Business, respectively, in recognition of our chapter’s commitment to excellence in student professional development.
We are open to all majors, and I hope you’ll check out our website, come to weekly meetings and events, and talk to our officers and members about SHRM. Hope to see you at an upcoming meeting! |

Major: Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Year: Senior Hometown: Salinas, CA After hearing about this organization during my first semester at SDSU in BA300, I joined one year later as a sophomore Fall 2019. I have always been interested in HR and knew that it was what I wanted to do from a fairly early age. I joined this organization to further my knowledge of the different subdivisions and current trends within the HR realm. I also joined to learn what networking was, how to network, and begin that journey with HR professionals and my peers. I can positively say, now that I have been a part of SHRM for five semesters, I have accomplished all of those things. The one thing that I felt was missing was getting even more involved in the process that goes behind all of the meetings, events, and fundraisers while showing my ability to be a leader. Two semesters ago, I was the Events Coordinator where I got to plan socials to allow members to get to know one another, create a safe space to be themselves, and have fun! Last semester as the Executive Treasurer, my goals were to keep the organizational funds and point system organized while also delving in further to meeting all of you! Now as your President this semester, I want to establish an open and fun environment for both the officers and members, while creating a smooth-running semester. I am looking forward to meeting more members than ever before -- please feel free to come stop by and say hi or email me for any further information on our membership/chapter! All majors are welcome! :) |

Major: Psychology and Communication
Year: Senior Hometown: San Jose, CA My name is Eric MacPherson and I am a fourth year student here at San Diego State University majoring in psychology and communication. I joined SHRM in the Fall of 2021 as a means to learn more about human resources and to begin networking in the field. Once I joined, however, I learned that SHRM has much more to offer than just information and networking opportunities. SHRM truly serves its members by offering things like the alumni mentor program, the guest speaker series, and the case competitions. All of these unique opportunities drew me closer to the club and motivated me to become involved in a more meaningful way. Newly elected as the Vice President, I am very excited about what the future holds and how I can help the club be of service to all of its members. |
Secretary

Major: Business Administration Management with a specialization in Human Resources and Political Science
Year: Junior Hometown: Milpitas, CA My freshman year I switched my major from General Business to Management with a specialization in HR and added a second major in Political Science. I want to combine both of my interests by pursuing a career in Human Resources while hopefully working for a non-profit political organization. While researching different ways to learn more about Human Resources, I came across SHRM. I joined SHRM in Fall of 2020 because it was the perfect opportunity to learn more about the field and network with like-minded individuals. Through SHRM I was able to gain valuable knowledge through the many events put on by SHRM that would be beneficial post-graduation. Last semester I was the Events Coordinator and got to plan socials and connect and socialize with other members. Entering my fourth semester with SHRM, I am super excited to be the Secretary and be more involved in the behind the scenes process of this amazing organization and everything it has to offer! |
Treasurer
|
Major: Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hi, my name is Calista Dao. I am your Spring 2022 Treasurer. I have been with SHRM SDSU since Fall 2020 as a regular member. My initial reason for joining SHRM was to connect with other students that were also interested in Human Resources. I realized throughout my time in SHRM that the organization offered meaningful connections and much more. There were guest speaker events that brought HR professionals in to speak about various topics that helped students handle real life situations. Not only that, but the socials also allowed for members to interact with one another in a casual and fun setting which helped strengthen bonds amongst the community. I highly recommend SHRM for the connections and the copious amount of HR knowledge that it has to offer. I cannot wait to have another great semester and to interact with our SHRM members once again! |
Co-Marketing & Media Director
|
Major: Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA I joined SHRM SDSU in Fall 2021 only out of sheer curiosity, yet it might have been one of the best decisions I have made in my academic career. I wanted to expand my network and knowledge within the HR field, and perhaps convince myself that this is the right major. Needless to say, SHRM has been an absolutely positive influence on both my professional and personal development. I admire how friendly everyone in the chapter was, and most importantly, how they were all so passionate about HR. To be an officer of this amazing organization is an immense honor for me, and I hope I can bring something new and exciting to SHRM SDSU in Spring 2022. |

Minor: Personality and Social Psychology Year: Senior Hometown: San Diego, CA Hello everyone! My name is Ayah, and I joined SHRM to gain more knowledge and experience in HR. I joined SHRM in my first semester at SDSU after transferring from San Diego City College, and even though it was virtual I learned so much and gained numerous connections in such a short period of time. Joining SHRM and becoming an officer was one of the best decision I made at SDSU, it helped build me professional and personally. It was through SHRM that I was able to gain my current position in HR, and continuously learn more about the field everyday. I am so grateful and excited to continue working with SHRM SDSU as the Co-Marketing and Media Director and look forward to the Spring 2022 semester! |

Major: Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Minor: Honors Minor in Interdisciplinary Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Milpitas, CA I joined SDSU SHRM because I wanted to grow professionally and utilize all the resources available to me for a successful career in Human Resources. As a new transfer student, I wanted to be involved with on campus organizations and SHRM was the one that stood out to me the most. From the first meeting I attended, I connected with the organization right away. I loved how passionate everyone was about the organization and it's mission! I pride myself being surrounded with like-minded individuals. Going into the spring semester, I am excited to be an officer for SDSU SHRM and helping the organization continue to grow in the coming years. |
San Diego SHRM Liaison
|
Major: Business Management with a specialization in Human Resources
Minor: Anthropology Year: Junior Hometown: San Diego, CA I switched my major to HR my second year because I wanted to combine my passion with business with my passion for working with and helping people. After looking into it further and having took some classes along with 2 internships, I definitely believe that HR is the correct career path for me! The past year I wasn't able to attend meetings due to having to attend mandatory seminars for the Fowler Scholars program where we are trained to become ethical business leaders, but since the meetings got changed, I can now attend SHRM meetings! Because of this, I ran for a officer position as a way to get as involved as I can and I chose to be the SD SHRM Liaison because I love talking to people and going to networking events, so I want to help connect the SDSU SHRM students to the professionals at SD SHRM. I am very excited to get to know the club more and grow alongside you all. Outside of SHRM, I am an HR intern at Manpower San Diego, the VP of Recruitment at Rotaract of SDSU, and the Director of Recruitment and Retention at the Financial Education Peer Program. I love hiking, weightlifting, boxing, backpacking, and paddle-boarding, and soccer. |
Technology Director
|
Major: Psychology with an Industrial-Organizational emphasis
Year: Senior Hometown: Irvine, CA Hi, my name is Emily Liner and I'm SDSU SHRM's Technology Director for Spring 2022! When I added the Industrial-Organizational Emphasis to my Psychology major during my junior year, it sparked my interest in Human Resources and lead me to a whole new set of potential career paths. I decided that before I graduate in May, I want to get even more involved in the field of HR. I did so by joining SHRM, which has introduced me to so many new ideas and topics within the field. I love how welcoming everyone is and how passionate they are about Human Resources, and I always look forward to each meeting. I can't wait to learn more with my peers in SHRM and help the organization continue to grow. |
Development Director
|
Major: Business Management
Year: Senior Hometown: Succasunna, NJ Hi everyone! My name is Stephanie Tran and I'm your Development Director for Spring 2022. Joining SHRM was one of the best decisions of my life because I was able to meet like-minded people who inspired me with their experiences and pushed me out of my comfort zone. Despite this being my first year with SHRM, I have gained many valuable resources from this organization that will help me to grow as a young professional. There is no other organization on campus that provides the type of workshops and guest speakers like this one. I can't wait to meet and help new SHRMies this semester! |
Corporate Relations Director
|
Major: Psychology with an Industrial-Organizational emphasis and Communications
Year: Senior Hometown: Billerica, MA I learned that the field of Human Resources was another common path within psychology after taking my PSY 201: Careers in Psychology course and I instantly fell in love! That semester I added the I/O emphasis and started taking those courses. I had learned about SHRM during my freshman year but was too nervous to join until last Spring, and I am so glad I did. Through even just one virtual semester of SHRM I have learned so much about the field of HR, networked with a number of HR professionals, and have been able to develop my interpersonal skills with interviews and personal branding. I wanted to be Development Director because junior year was a critical year for finding internships and job opportunities, so while I was already going to be researching I wanted to also help my fellow SHRMies find these opportunities as well. I have even started working on a small research project with Professor Dean to find common KSAOs, salaries, and experience needed for different job titles within HR to further help our members be successful after graduation. I am so excited to see what this year will bring:) |
Member Relations Director
|
Major: Comparative Literature
Year: Senior Hometown: Castaic, CA Hi everyone! My name is Mackenna Teeman and I am your Spring 2022 Member Relations Director. I joined SDSU SHRM in Fall 2021. Joining SHRM has allowed me to network and gain more real-life knowledge about Human Resources. I have throughly enjoyed my time in the chapter so far. I have had a great time getting to know our members and am excited to be more involved. I can't wait to get to know even more of the SHRMies! I think that joining an organization like this is a great way to get to know the field. This academic organization can provide people interested in the field to figure out if it is something they want to do. The SDSU SHRM has allowed me to explore the field and learn about all of the different aspects of the field. I have enjoyed the panels we have held and being able to talk about what it takes to make it in Human Resources. As the Member Relations Director, I hope to be an open line of communication for potential new members and encourage them to join our amazing group. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me if you would like to learn more about this great organization! |

I'm a junior pursuing a Business Management major with a minor in I/O Psychology. I heard about SHRM in Dr. Dean's MGT 352 class and decided to go to one of the guest speaker meetings for extra credit this past fall. Afterwards, I fell in love with the organization and knew I wanted to join SHRM SDSU as soon as possible. I joined Fall 2021 and began learning so much about HR, networking, and how to incorporate passion and success in the business world. I'm excited to help link active members with SDSU alumni through the mentorship program and am looking forward to the upcoming year! |
Historian
|
Major: Business Administration Management with a specialization in Entrepreneurship
Minor: Religious Studies Year: Senior Hometown: Imperial Beach, CA I have been in SDSU for some time now, and because of work and other various responsibilities, I could not be part of the SDSU community. Last semester, with the help of a friend, SHRM was introduced to me. I made connections with other students, and I thought it would be a great way to meet new people and network with various professionals who could teach me about the workforce. I was right; the first meeting I attended taught me many things from real professionals. My background is Business administration/ management- entrepreneurship, Religious Studies, and now being an officer in a Human Resources organization is confusing to most. Still, I firmly believe that knowledge in the field is as necessary as cultural intelligence. I decided to take on the Historian position because I thought it fit my abilities the most. However, I am more excited about what I will learn this semester and how many people I will continue to meet while in the organization. |
